'Barbie' and 'Oppenheimer' garner highest number of Golden Globes nominations
With ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ and ‘Poor Things’ tying for third place.
Today, the Golden Globes® announced the nominees of the 81st Annual Golden Globe® Awards, which will air live on CBS and stream on Paramount+ on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. The nominations were announced by Cedric “The Entertainer'' and Wilmer Valderrama who presented nominees for each of the 27 award categories.
Barbie got the most nominations, 9, including one for Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy, one for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, a new category this year, Best Director for Greta Gerwig, Best Performance for Margot Robbie, in the Musical or Comedy category, a Best Performance in a Supporting Role nomination for Ryan Gosling as Ken, as well as three songs from the film vying for Best Original Song.
Oppenheimer’s nominations, 8 in total, include Best Picture — Drama, Cinematic and Box Offce Achievement, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Director for Christopher Nolan, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. and the list goes on and on.
One of the perks of being one of the voters for the prestigious awards, which have been around since 1944, is that stars and other creatives send the members little notes of appreciation once their title has been nominated.
Greta Gerwig, director and co-writer of Barbie, wrote “Everyone in the Barbie family is thrilled to pieces with the Golden Globe nominations - it was such a collective effort of joy and risk-taking and to see the film recognized is incredible. We are honored to be in such excellent company and can’t wait to bring the Barbie party to the Globes.”
“I am thrilled Artists Equity’s first film is nominated for best picture (musical or comedy), recognizing the value and importance of the entire collective effort. I hope every person whose name was on the call sheet, front and back, feels as validated by this as I feel grateful to have worked with them,” wrote Ben Affleck, director, producer and star of Air, which received a Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy nomination as well as a Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy nod for leading man Matt Damon.
Damon, also a producer on Air, added, “Thanks so much to the Golden Globes voters for acknowledging Artists Equity’s first movie. I’m really proud to be a part of this incredible cast and crew.
Director Todd Haynes, and the producers of May December, sent this: “Thank you to the Golden Globes for nominating May December as Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, and thank you for recognizing the outstanding performances from Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore and Charles Melton. We made this film in 23 days on a small budget, and owe a debt of gratitude to our filmmaking family for their dedication and collaboration. We are so honored by the recognition for the work we did together. Thank you.”
That kind of sums it up and I didn’t know the film was made in 23 days, so there you go team May December. Congrats!
Netflix was definitely the winner in nominations, as the streaming giant topped the list at 13, followed closely by Warner Bros. Pictures with 12, A24 and Universal Pictures with 11 each.
From Netflix, there is Maestro, Bradley Cooper’s tour de force biopic on Leonard Bernstein, May December which the streamer is releasing in the US market, J.A. Bayona’s Society of the Snow, which garnered a Best Motion Picture — Non-English Language nod, and Rustin, which deservedly saw Colman Domingo, nominated for Best Actor, Motion Picture - Drama.
Domingo wrote: “Thank you to the Golden Globes. To be honored with this nomination for my portrayal of Bayard Rustin means the world. Rustin was a hero who changed history in the long march towards true equality and so many more people will now know his name and achievements. My heart is happy. I share this with my entire Rustin company, my brilliant director George C. Wolfe, my dedicated producers Bruce Cohen and Higher Ground's Tonia Davis, screenwriters Julian Breece and Dustin Lance Black, and the extraordinary cast and crew who gave me the gift of Bayard Rustin. Congratulations to my dear comrades in all categories for their hard work and special shoutout to Rustin's Lenny Kravitz on his nomination for Best Original Song.”
Italy’s Oscar submission, Io Capitano by Matteo Garrone was also picked among the Non-English Language film nominations, as is France’s Anatomy of a Fall, Finland’s Fallen Leaves, the US’s Past Lives, and the UK’s Zone of Interest, which rounds out the noms with Society of the Snow.
Poor Things got nominations for Emma Stone, as well as Best Picture — Musical or Comedy, for Mark Ruffalo, as Best Supporting Actor, and Best Director, for Yorgos Lanthimos.
Martin Scorsese’s latest, Killers of the Flower Moon got a nod for Best Picture — Drama, as well as Best Performances nominations for both Lily Gladstone and Leonardo Di Caprio, Best Supporting Actor for Robert De Niro, and a Best Director nod for Scorsese.
The Globes also announced the TV nominations and they are all listed below. Yours truly doesn’t vote for TV as it was already a gargantuan task to get through all the films that were submitted. Maybe next year… Inshallah!
