Day Five of the Minimalist Fashionista on Lockdown: Matteo Garrone's films, Antica Sartoria at S*auce and a cup of Espresso
These times are bringing out the best, and the worst, in all of us. But more on this later.
So where would you like to go? I mean when you are first let out of this endless inferno of solitary confinement — I meant “Social Distancing” of course! I’d love to catch a film in a cinema, share a pizza with friends and get my nails done. I’d love to hear your picks.
For films today I want to draw your attention to Italian filmmaker extraordinaire Matteo Garrone. I first watched ‘Gomorra’ and at first, almost dismissed it as not similar enough to the book by Roberto Saviano. I’ve since gone back to it and discovered how much of a genius Garrone really is. A few years ago, ‘A Tale of Tales’ was a true fairy tale film, complete with the horror I remember in childhood tales. I mean, even the Brothers Grimm had horrific sequences in their “children’s tales”.
Both ‘Gomorra’ and ‘Dogman’ are available on Netflix and I can’t wait to watch Garrone’s ‘Pinocchio’. If you’re listening Matteo, I’d love a link. :-) Oh, by the way, I interviewed the filmmaker a couple of years ago in Cannes and found him charming, funny and utterly intelligent without being full of himself. Something difficult to find in cinema circles — and particularly Italian ones.
Fashion wise, my earrings were a gift from my mother when I was like 10 years old. I doubt you’ll get the exact ones but Neapolitan fake gold “patacconi” earrings aren’t difficult to find online. Here is a link to a website that seems to have a few in their selection.
My shirt is also six years old, got it in better times at Sauce in Dubai. It’s from Antica Sartoria, a company with a shop in Positano but available around the world. Even in Cannes there is a shop off the Croisette that specializes in their fabulously extravagant shirts. I pair mine with jeans and even found a pair from Zara that matches the color.
Coffee wise, I prefer Lavazza, but any espresso blend is great. If you get gourmet coffee where you are, try a hazelnut blend in your espresso mocha machine. It will come out divine!
So now back to the opening statement. I met a girl and her mother in NYC about a year ago. The girl was apartment hunting with her mom to attend journalism school at Columbia. A smart girl with a cool mom. We started following each other on social media and I noticed that even though I often liked or commented on her tweets and IG posts, she never did the same back. OK, I’m not your cup of tea, chickie. I could dig that.
Two days ago I saw that she had followed my YouTube channel and went to hers to check it out. I swear, I can’t make this up, found her video from yesterday wearing a shirt similar to my Free People one, three minutes long where she discusses, “Film, fashion and literature”. OK, she changed one word but she copied me flat out! At the beginning of her video she says “I got the idea from my friend Nina Rothe”. Eh hum… We ain’t friends — actually I blocked her now — and how about a shoutout to someone who has inspired you? I do it all the time, most of our ideas aren’t our own, but I give credit where credit is due.
Anyway, creepy eh? Which just goes to show that whoever we were before this whole thing started, is probably exactly who we will be when it ends. From my lips to your ears. Eyes, whatever.
