The special preview on 17 February will be followed by a discussion with Ben Hania who will be present in person.
Four Daughters, Kaother Ben Hania’s outstanding doc, is nominated this year for an Academy Award as Best Documentary. Ben Hania is no stranger to being nominated, as in 2021 her previous work, the fiction narrative The Man Who Sold His Skin, was nominated in the Best International Feature category.
Recently, I wrote an open letter to Ben Hania which you can find here. Her work is always groundbreaking and Four Daughters is no exception.
I also got to interview her on video during the BFI London Film Festival and love the resulting Selfies Interview, as she’s always so sure of herself and intelligent.
The folks at Ciné Lumière best describe Four Daughters on their site:
“In this astonishing and poignant film, director Kaouther Ben Hania (The Man who Sold His Skin) blends documentary and fiction to tell the story of Olfa and her four daughters. One day, her two eldest daughters disappeared without a trace. The director brings in actors to play the missing daughters and combines direct interviews with re-enactments. The result is an intimate, yet devastating, journey of hope, rebellion, violence, transmission and sisterhood that will question the very foundations of our societies.”
Four Daughters has already been released in the US, while in the UK and Ireland it will enjoy a wide release by Modern Films starting on March 1st of this year.
The Q&A will be moderated by UK producer Elhum Shakerifar.
