We should always remember that these awards are handed out by my esteemed colleagues, myself included, all journalists and therefore aren’t like the BAFTAs, Oscars or SAG Awards, which are decided by fellow film making and acting peers.
This year’s Golden Globes ceremony was an affair to be remembered. It has kicked off Awards Season in Hollywood with a bang. In fact, the 82nd ANNUAL GOLDEN GLOBES® averaged 10.1 million viewers, a notable feat while up against Sunday Night’s NFL game between the Minnesota Vikings and the Detroit Lions on NBC. This year’s live-streaming audience was up 9% from last year on Paramount+ and the CBS App and was the number 1 broadcast special across all of TV in the last 12 months, driving 40 million social interactions on show night. Not bad for an awards body that was in the dumps just a couple of years ago!
Personally, I was yesterday years old when I first saw a man march down the red carpet in head to toe green. Complete with a bucket hat which the star in question, The Apprentice’s Jeremy Strong wore for a reason. As gossip publication Page Six explains in their article, Strong “wore the hat for a very specific reason: He was covering up his “wild-looking” hair for his role in the upcoming Bruce Springsteen biopic, “Deliver Me From Nowhere,” with Jeremy Allen White” to top his luscious Loro Piana mint velvet suit. Strong returned to the set of the film, where he plays Springsteen manager Jon Landau the following morning, so there would have been no time to change the hairstyle. But there were other notable green beauties at the Globes on Sunday evening, including The Wizard from Wicked himself, Jeff Goldblum who presented Best Original Song Motion Picture at the awards, along with the stunning Michelle Yeoh. He wore an AMIRI Spring Summer 2025 look which consisted of a mint green (is there a trend starting here??) crystal embossed jacket and black trousers. The star is a fan of the brand, which features traditional silhouettes in very bold colors and fabrics/skins.
Last but not least among the green male beauties is Andrew Garfield, whose custom-made Gucci tux in dark forest green, with matching shirt and all, was a splendor to behold. He even donned glasses which sent his fans on social media in a tizzy. Yes, Buzzfeed, with their typically “buzzy” clickbait headline, announced: “People have lost their dang minds over Andrew Garfield’s glasses at the Golden Globes.” Yes, we have, because he does add cute to his already extensive list of qualities and I wouldn’t mind opening a book with him right now.
Yet the true winners of the evening were women. Starting with this year’s host Nikki Glaser — who singlehandedly managed to be both “the best host Ricky Gervais” (according to The Telegraph) and also “condemned” for irreverent jokes, including one that went like this: “Zendaya, you were incredible in Dune,” she said, adding: “Oh my God, I woke up for all of your scenes. You were so good... and Challengers, girl? Oh my God! That movie was more sexually charged than Diddy’s credit card. I mean, seriously.”
“If you don’t like it, go and make your own movie!”
Amidst all the glitz and glamour we can forget easily that Glaser was the very first woman to host the ceremony solo, in the Golden Globes’ 82 year history! And that would be enough for me, as a fellow woman, to feel the warmth and pride build up, considering I have been a part of this illustrious body of voting for the past two years.
Three more women winners included Fernanda Torres, who walked away with a Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture — Drama statuette for Walter Salles’ I’m Still Here. Torres is the first Brazilian actress to ever win a Golden Globe and that’s another reason for pride. Torres wore a beautifully simple black gown by Belgian designer Olivier Theyskens.
Demi Moore also walked away a winner, for the very first time in her life, as she revealed in her speech! Moore won the coveted Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy globe for her performance in the body horror The Substance by Coralie Fargeat, the latter also a phenomenal woman, who wrote, directed and even co-edited and co-produced the film. Moore’s speech went viral by the way, and for a good reason! The actress wore an Armani Privé gown with a sculptural bodice, which showed off her toned arms and svelte physique.
And last but not least, the wondrous Zoe Saldaña who won the Best Supporting Actress award for her role in Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez. The film got four statuettes in total, including Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy, Best Original Song for “Mi Camino,” as well as Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language. Saldaña wore a beautiful dark brown strapless YSL sequined gown with a fabric dark bronze cape covering her shoulders, in case she got cold. And a Cartier necklace to die for! Let’s also not forget that a nomination was also handed out to Karla Sofía Gascón who becomes the first trans actress ever to be nominated — I believe for any major award!
So, to those who complain and moan about Emilia Pérez winning too much this year at the Golden Globes, I second what Gascón famously said in a Vanity Fair interview — “If you don’t like it, go and make your own movie!”
